Local Government Expert Suggests Amendment Of Laws To Make District Level Election Partisan

The Dean of Studies at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Eric Oduro Osae has called for the amendment of Article 248 of the 1992 Constitution which makes district level elections non-partisan.

He said per the constitutional Review Commission`s recommendation, the amendment will allow Parliament to come up with an act that will support political parties participation in district level elections.

Dr. Osae made the call on GTV`s Current Affairs Programme, Talking Point.

For his part the Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission Christian Owusu Parry said district level elections devoid of politics makes mobilization of people for development easier.

With respect to those who hides behind political parties to campaign Mr. Parry said they will be sanctioned accordingly.

The Director of Programmes at the NCCE, Samuel Akuamoah expressed fear at the level of politicisation of this year`s district assembly elections.

He said there is so much intolerance in some communities and so the elections must not be politicised in any way.

On the level of awareness, panelist commended the media for the courage so far urging them to do more.

They also called for encouragement and support for more women to go into politics.
