Nayale Cocaine Saga: NDC Govt Not Capable Of Dealing With Drug Cases; I Knew The People Will Be Freed - Obiri Boahen

The trial of the six persons arrested in connection with the exportation of 12.5kg of cocaine to the United Kingdom, which resulted in the conviction of Nayele Ametefe, aka Ruby Adu-Gyamfi, was discontinued on Tuesday after the state dropped all charges against the accused persons.

Appearing before an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Francis Obiri, a Chief State Attorney, Ms Penelope Ann Mammattha, said the state had filed a Nolle Prosequi seeking to drop the charges against the suspects as predicted by Daily Guide last month. The paper had said that the case would not go any further because of the alleged involvement of a top senior government official.

A copy of the application in possession of DAILY GUIDE, dated February 20, 2015 at the Attorney General’s (AG’s) Chambers, signed by the AG, Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, said “Take notice that the state intends that the proceedings against the accused persons in the above-named case shall not continue.”

The judge in separate rulings said before the court that an application of Nolle Prosequi was filed by the state at 8:41am on February 24, 2015 in respect of the case.

Judge Obiri said the state, per the application, was telling the court and indeed the whole world that it does not intend to continue with the case involving the accused persons.

Mr. Obiri accordingly discharged the accused persons in the respective cases.

But responding to the case, the Private Legal Practitioner who doubles as the deputy General Secretary of NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen has asserted it is the smartest move by the NDC government to drop the charges against the six persons; knowing there is a possibility that some top government officials will be mentioned in the trial.

The government is smart to say there is no star witness because it knows that if the issue is probed further, top people in government will be mentioned in the case and so the best thing is to end the case; the prosecuting lawyers are good to ask relevant questions that can expose the government…..it could also be that the evidence of the state prosecution witness to the police was not strong to nail the six person…..I’m not surprised because I knew the NDC government will free the people involved in the Nayele’s cocaine saga”, he said on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show.

He however asserted that it is established through the trial of the six persons involved in the Nayele’s cocaine saga that the NDC government is not capable of dealing with cocaine cases in the country.
