Andre Ayew Named Olympique Marseille Player Of The Month

The Ghana international has been recognised as the clubs best player for the month of February. Olympique Marseille have named Andre Ayew their Player of the Month for February. The Ghana star claimed the gong after receiving over 52 percent of the public votes and was confirmed as the Olympien of the Month on Tuesday morning. Ayew contested some major matches for both the Black Stars and OM in February. He was instrumental in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Equatorial Guinea on February 5, scoring once before the contest was abruptly suspended due to fan violence. He wasnt able to inspire the Black Stars to the Afcon title, however, and despite converting his spot kick in the penalty shootout that followed the final, he was visibly distraught as Ivory Coast claimed the continental crown. Upon returning to France, however, Ayew didnt let his disappointment get the better of him and applied himself superbly in Ligue 1. He returned to the starting lineup against Stade de Reims and delivered an outstanding performance for Marcelo Bielsa's side, scoring in a 2-1 victory. The Marseille fans, recognising his passion and saluting his heartbreak with Ghana, unveiled a Ghanaian flag during that match. It was a gesture that was clearly appreciated by the emotional Ayew, although, as reported by Goal yesterday, his future at Marseille remains in doubt. He scored against Caen at the Stade Velodrome two weeks later, although was unable to prevent OM from suffering a damaging home defeat. Steve Mandanda came second in the voting for the OM Player of the Month award with 15 percent of the votes, while Jeremy Morel also made the podium with 11 percent. Next up for Marseille is a trip to the Stade Municipal and a meeting with Toulouse on Friday evening.
