Michael Essien receives 'Humanitarian campaigner of the year' award

Michael Essien has been recognised for the work of his charity foundation, the AC Milan star honoured as the the humanitarian of the year by British weekly, Asian Voice in their 2015 Political and Public Life Awards in London on February 26.

Essien who has done a lot of charity work offering support to the needy in some parts of Ghana was awarded this year's gong most importantly for his role in the #UnitedAgstEbola initiative which aimed to raise funds to educate people in West Africa about Ebola prevention.

The former Chelsea midfielder could not attend the awards ceremony at the House of Commons due to club commitments and was represented by his wife, Akosua Puni.

“I am honoured, delighted and grateful to be selected as the Humanitarian Campaigner of the year 2015. This is a prestigious award which I humbly accept,” Mrs. Essien said after receiving the award on behalf of the Ghanaian football star.

“I am pleased that this award celebrates the good work we have been doing to support the needy in society and will like to share this with my family, friends, Michael Essien foundation team and Health Africa International team," she added.

Akosua Puni concluded: “Finally, I will like to say a big thank you to all those who have supported our latest campaign – #UnitedAgstEbola, please keep supporting us.”
