Some angry traders in Kumasi besieged the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Tuesday morning to protest against a proposed demolition of shops at the Kejetia Lorry Terminal.
The KMA has earmarked a plan to demolish the age-old Kumasi Central Market and reconstruct it with modern facilities.
According to Graphiconline’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor, the angry traders from Kejetia claim that they have gathered that as part of the plans for the reconstruction of the central market, the KMA has also decided to demolish shops at the Kejetia Lorry Terminal.
The lorry terminal was originally built solely for vehicles to load and offload goods and serve as a central transport station for commuters in Kumasi. But it has seen a number of shops constructed over there in the last 15years.
The angry traders argued that their shops were originally not part of the Kumasi Central Market project and therefore do not understand why the assembly should earmark it for demolition.
According to our correspondent, the angry traders chanted war songs and threatened to resist the demolition exercise.
Their leaders were however given access to meet with the Kumasi Mayor, Mr Kojo Bonsu and other executives of the assembly.
