Aspirants Sell Government Electricity Poles For Power

President Dramani Mahama’s effort of curbing corruption in the country is likely to be hindered by some happenings at Kpando in the Volta region.

Information gathered by The New Crusading GUIDE revealed that some incumbent and aspiring Assembly members; and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party executives in Kpando are selling electricity poles left behind from a previous government funded project to the people of the area.

According to our source, in their quest to lure voters into voting for them, they promise the communities electricity in return for votes and afterward charge them for same.

The Aspirants who capitalized on the villagers anxiousness to be connected to the national grid tricked the communities in believing that the connection to the national grid was for free but later declined to do so.

Communities such as Carpenter Kofi, Kpando Konda, Ando Kofe,  and Gbofe all in the Kpando have  had their fair shares of the deceit and defraud, selling government solar lamps to them at GHS 50.00 instead of GHS 30.00.

In Carpenter Kofi, an aspiring candidate, Henry Afodofe who allegedly promised free electricity if voted for, dashed the hope of the communities under his jurisdiction by turning round to collect money from them for bringing electricity to the area.

Furthermore, in Kpando Konda, a propaganda secretary of the NDC in Kponda , Mr. Francis Ocloo who was introduced as the contractor to facilitate their connection of the national grid by one Mr. Killian Donkor is allegedly demanding GHC 1,700 and 3,200 to connect residents to electricity.

This, according to him, is the fact that those communities were not part of the governments electrification program but he and his team were diverting materials meant for another  area to assist them hence their need to make the payment.
The story is no different in Ando Kofe where the incumbent assembly woman for Gabi, Madam Ophelia Kuma is claiming she purchased the said electric poles to get the community connected to the national grid.

The people of the communities are therefore calling for investigation to know whether China Water, an energy company which was contractor by the Ministry of Energy to extend electricity to those communities or Mr. Ocloo has sold the poles to Madam Kuma.

The residents are also of the view that at a time when President Mahama is determined to fighting corruption, acts like the above-mentioned by the above named persons should be investigated and perpetrators brought to book.

In addition, the people of Ando Kofe and Gbofe complained that to be connected to the national grid they have to do the bush clearing, the excavation for the China Water Company and sometimes provide diesel for the company’s chainsaws.

The people of Kpando are therefore calling on authorities to intervene.
