Ghana FA In Talks With Asamoah Gyan To Rescind His Decision On Penalty Taking
Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed the FA is in talks with Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan to rescind his decision on penalty taking.
Gyan in recent times has refused to take penalty kicks for the Black Stars following his unfortunate misses in crucial games.
The 29-year-old had an unforgettable moment in 2010 when he missed a last- gasp penalty kick at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
A kick which eventually saw Ghana suffering a painful exit from the competition and hence missing out on the opportunity to become the first African country to reach the Semi-finals of the World Cup.
Gyan’s penalty woes further continued after missing another crucial kick at the Semifinals of the 2012 Cup of Nations in Gabon-Equatorial Guinea.
The Al Ain striker has since decided not to take penalty kicks in regulation time after the two ill-fated moments in his football career, thus the 2010 World Cup and 2012 Cup of Nations.
Ghana’s all time leading scorer was alleged to have signaled for his substitution in the Black Stars 2015 AFCON finals with Cote d’ Ivoire after it appeared the game was travelling into penalty shootouts.
Kwesi Nyantakyi has however revealed his outfit are in talks with the Ghana skipper to annul his decision not to take penalty kicks for the Black Stars.
“Gyan is a nice player and an excellent penalty taker for that matter” Kwesi Nyantakyi told Accra-based Hot Fm.
“He has taken a decision and I think everyone respect the decision he has taken”
“But I think it is time for him to change that decision and return to take penalty kicks for the Black Stars”
“We are still talking to him to rescind his decision and start taking penalty kick again for the Black Stars”
"So we are talking to him and we hope he changes his mind".
The Black Stars have struggled with penalty kicks in several tournament which has eventually seen them exiting various competition through penalty shootouts.
Ghana lost 9-8 on penalties to Cote d’ Ivoire at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
