Afari Gyan Has Not Committed Any Crime; We Are All Paying The Price Of Democracy - Bernard Monnah

The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has kicked against blaming the Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan for the loss of Gh¢317 million due to the court order to stop the District Assembly elections.

The Supreme Court, by a unanimous decision last Friday, suspended the organization of the district level elections, stating that it was unconstitutional.

The court ordered the commission to start all over again CI 85, a legal instrument which seeks to demarcate electoral boundaries for the district elections in 2015.

This was after an aggrieved fisherman in the Central Region instituted an action against the EC for contravening the Supreme law of the land.

Meanwhile, a pressure group, Movement For Change (MFC), has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, as well as the entire membership of the commission.

The MFC further want the Chairman of EC, and other leading members of the EC to be “prosecuted for willfully causing huge financial loss to the state”.

In a statement issued days after the ruling, MFC contends that the EC had earlier been warned several times that its preparations were illegal, but the elections ombudsman ignored the warnings.

But Bernard Monnah on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" programme reacted that Dr. Afari Gyan and his members have not committed any crime as it was the court decision to cancel the elections after the EC had put measures to conduct the elections.

He stressed that once the court has decided to suspend the election, nobody can disrespect that order; adding, “All of us have paid the price of democracy and indeed the price for our judiciary system...Dr Afari Gyan has not committed any crime; it was court decision to cancel the election”.
