President Mahama Must Consult Stakeholders In Selecting EC Boss

The General-Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has made a strong call to the President of the Republic to undertake widespread and thorough consultation before appointing the next Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

The Chief Scribe of the largest opposition party insisted that the Electoral Commission has suffered major setbacks arising from embarrassing revelations during the Election Petition at the Supreme Court and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court which culminated in the cancellation of the District Assembly elections occasioning colossal losses to the exchequer.

He stressed that, it was important for the Electoral Commission to win back the confidence of the Ghanaian people.

To achieve this goal, Kwabena Agyapong posited that the President should through his Council of State engage all major stakeholders in a constructive manner in order to appoint a new chairman for the EC who will inspire the revival of public confidence in the commission.

This call comes at a time when names of possible replacement for the outgoing EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, are being bandied about.

Recently, the Executive Director of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) Professor Emmanuel Gyimah-Boadi has had the cause to publicly state he is not interested in succeeding Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan as the chairman of the Electoral Commission.

He said he could not take up the electoral body’s job because he has a lot on his hands now, however, he said he feels honored to have been linked with the position.

Other names have also come up for the position. They include the Executive Director of governance think-tank IDEG, Dr Emmanuel Akwetey; Deputy Chairman of Electoral Commission, Amadu Sulley and the chairman of the World Cup Commission, Justice Senyo Dzamefe.

But Kwabena Agyei Agyapong wants President Mahama to engage the stakeholders in an exchange of ideas before taking any decision as to who becomes the new EC Boss
