Brong Ahafo Records 73% Drop In Armed Robbery In 2014

Statistics from the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command has it that armed robbery in the region reduced by 73% in 2014, compared to 2013.

Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Maxwell Atingane revealed this achievement  in Sunyani during this year's West Africa Security Service Association (WASSA) celebration which brought together all the security agencies in the region.

“There was also 37% reduction in the cases of murder compared with the preceding year crossing the 15% set. Fraud reduced by 30%; stealing reduced by 17%; reported rape cases increase by 109% while defilement was 50%. Generally, the total cases of crime reported in 2014 reduced by 17%,” DCOP Atingane revealed.

He noted that despite the success chalked by the police, accommodation remains a major challenge.

“Inadequate residential accommodation continued to be a major constraint confronting police in the region. Most recruit constables did not have decent accommodation, therefore affecting their morale towards duty,” he noted.

DCOP Atingane also noted that visibility was intensified in Sunyani, Berekum, Dormaa Ahenkro, Sampa, Techiman, Nkoranza, Kintampo and Atebubu, which contributed immensely in reducing crime.

Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Justice Samuel Adjei, speaking at the ceremony, commended the police for helping to reduce crime in the region. Mr Adjei called for the extension of their visibility to the hinterlands in the region.

Mr Adjei also advised the police to ensure that discipline is their hallmark. This, he said, would nurture  their character as professionals.
