Supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, thronged the streets of Kumasi to celebrate the achievements of President John Dramani Mahama in a march organized by Organised Youth of Ashanti (OYA), a pro-government group.
The march was dubbed ‘1000 March for Mahama’.
The aim of the march, according to executives of OYA was to contradict the claim that the ruling administration has not achieved anything since it assumed the presidency. It was also to ensure that President Mahama gets 1 million votes during the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary election.
However, former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yammin, speaking to Isaac Owusu of Hello FM, said the number of people who attended the march exceeded their expectation; hence they are no longer targeting one million votes.
According to him, the NDC will share the total number of votes with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) equally; ‘50 percent’. He said even though the NPP wants to paint a gloomy picture in the Ashanti Region, the ruling administration has really achieved a lot and so they will get 50 percent of the total votes in 2016 in the Ashanti Region.
Brogya Genfi, Ashanti regional NDC youth organiser and co-founder of OYA also speaking to the March, said they (OYA) were surprised at the number of people who joined in the march. He said, 1,500 placards were distributed at the march, yet there were "hundreds of people left without placards; this shows that the people who came were more than 1,500."
