Sack A-G to Prove Commitment to Fight Against Corruption PPP

The Progressive People's Party (PPP) has called on President Mahama to dismiss the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General (A-G) as a first step to indicate his disappointment with the outcome of the Woyome trial.

Reason

“We say this because the A-G is ultimately responsible for the department and her actions are that of the President,” the PPP stated.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Mr Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, the PPP said that the A-G's attitude to the Woyome prosecution had been abysmal and had injured the state greatly.

The PPP said it learnt with utter dismay the acquittal of Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) financier, who was standing trial for obtaining judgement debt of Gh¢ 51.2 million through fraudulent means.

“The outcome of the trial is disgraceful and an affront to the fight against corruption,” the PPP stated.

Mr Asamoah-Siaw said the trial judge, in his decision, indicated that the state prosecutors did a poor job for failing to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Woyome was indeed guilty of the charges.

Leakage of confidential report

According to the PPP,  it also emerged that confidential information, letters and memos were leaked to the legal team of the accused by lawyers or staff of the state.

“How can public servants who are paid by the taxpayer and who have sworn to protect the state's resources betray their livelihood?” the PPP asked.

“This is where we need our President to act and stem the tide and attitude of thievery, betrayal, disloyalty and increasing treasonable conduct on the part of public officials,” it further stated.

The President, at the last sessional address, bemoaned the attitude of public officials put in charge of state resources whose conduct was injurious to the republic.

Reminder

“While we sympathise with the President that we all have such an unfortunate situation at hand, we wish to remind the President that he holds the key to fix the situation and reverse this trend. The enormous powers given to the President by the Constitution is to be exercised to obtain the desired accountability from public officials to the people. It is not enough to bemoan the situation or complain about it when the President has the power to cause the desired change.

“It is time for the people of Ghana to vote the PPP to implement the reforms that will ensure that corruption is fought squarely by establishing an independent prosecutor [office] and bringing a moderating influence to bear on public policy. We need to act now because the end of this stealing spree will be nothing but something unpleasant, because it is the natural consequence of underdevelopment caused by state-sponsored corruption,” the statement said.
