Whilst Ghanaians Reel Under Energy Crisis, Tariffs Go Up

The increase in the utility tariff is as a result of the quarterly Automatic Adjustment Formula by the regulator and comes at a time when Ghanaians are reeling under serious energy crisis.

The Ghana Water Company will, however, not be able to charge the new rates until certain challenges are fixed.

According to a statement released by the PURC on Thursday, the marginal increases have been necessitated by the current electricity situation, where consumers are spending extra income on the acquisition of other alternative sources of electricity which costs them more.

“This increase is meant to preserve the current load share situation by assisting the Electricity Distribution Companies to maintain its network under the current circumstances to avoid an immediate collapse of the distribution network”, the commission stated.

Ghanaians have for more than one year now been enduring, power rationing.

Many have expressed frustrations at the development, but the managers of the power systems say there is little they can do under the circumstances.
