There are 36 states in Nigeria. From the polling units, the results are taken to the collation centre at the Local Government level, then constituency before the state level. The final results declaring the winner would be announced in Abuja.

Meanwhile the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has described as “national embarrassment” the inability of card readers to read the Permanent Voters card (PVC) of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan at his Otuoke polling unit in his home State Bayalsa during last Saturday’s accreditation.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahirru Jega who expressed worry about the incident personally apologized to the president and all others who suffered similar fate.

On Saturday the President in the company of the First Lady Mrs Patience Jonathan visited their polling unit to vote. However, several attempts to verify the president’s PVC proved futile. He had to be manually verified and accredited to vote.

The hitches notwithstanding, the President described the process as good and asked for patience for the INEC.

He said: “President Jonathan is just one voter. So, even if we have problem with my own card, as long as the process is going on well across the nation, it is okay. Definitely, they will sort out my own. I can't be a ghost voter. Everybody knows me…’’.

He noted that "What happened in the case of Mr. President is regrettable and a national “embarrassment".

According the INEC chairman, "Despite our challenges, we believe that the card readers have done the best for credible elections" and added that information reaching his office indicated that just 0.25 per cent of the card readers were not working.

On Saturday, INEC had to go back on its work to allow for manual accreditation because a lot of card readers were faulty.
