Fishermen Sack Minister

Fishermen across the country’s coast have besieged the Ministry of Fisheries and aquaculture Development in protest against the dissolution of the premix committee.

According to the fishermen, the Minister, Sherry Ayittey, had been making unilateral decisions without consulting them, and so she must resign.

They also cited for instance, the plan to dissolve the landing beach committee, saying that was an unacceptable development.

Some of the fishermen who spoke to Adom FM also questioned the abilities of the Fisheries Minister.

The group said their visit to the ministry was to question why the committee had been dissolved without their consent.

They presented a petition to the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and aquaculture Development, Benita Sena Okity-Duah.

The deputy minister promised to get the group’s concerns addressed and a response conveyed to them in the shortest time possible.

Last month the central Regional branch of the national Democratic congress (NDC) accused the premix committees in the region of diversion of premix fuel and lack of accountability, which it said, was creating open confrontations.

A statement signed by the party’s communications officer, consequently appealed to president John Mahama to dissolve all premix committees in the region, and empower Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, the regional minister, to reconstitute them.
