Minister Accuses Former Government

The Minister of Transportation, Hon. Mike Hammah has said the kind of due diligence which was followed prior to the purchase of 400 Yaxing buses from China for the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) by the NPP government was flawed. According to the Minister, the lack of careful scrutiny of the vehicles before they were purchased resulted in the purchase of comparatively low quality vehicles for the country. Hon, Mike Hamah made this statement in Parliament when he answered a question by Hon. Attuquaye Armah, MP for Trobo-Amasaman on the number of Metro mass buses imported into the country from China and the number of the buses which are now operational. The minister said the MMT currently has 400 Yaxing buses comprising 312 single deckers and 88 double deckers purchased at a cost of 18.6million dollars in addition to other buses. According to the Minister 91 of the Yaxing buses are presently in operation, 195 are not in operation as a result of mechanical and electrical fault and unavailability of parts and 13 buses have been cannibalized to service other buses. He said 101 more buses have been earmarked to be cannibalized to service other buses.
