B/A Education Directorate Engages BNI; To Check Examination Malpractices

The Brong Ahafo Regional Directorate of Education has engaged officers of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to support invigilation and help check examination malpractices in the ongoing West African Senior High School Certification Examinations (WASSCE) in the region.

According to the directorate, the security officers would be deployed every morning to the various examination centres in the region.

The move is to also ensure that candidates do independent work.

Authorities at the directorate are worried that Brong Ahafo topped in examination malpractices in 2014, according to a report released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Reversing the trend
To reverse the trend, the directorate is collaborating with other relevant institutions, and has intensified invigilation in the ongoing WASSCE.

The directorate said it was unlawful for educational authorities to sack students who owed tuition fees from writing the WASSCE, and school heads who would disallow final-year students to write the examinations would not be spared.

It advised parents and guardians to endeavour to pay the tuition fees of their children and provide them with their basic educational needs to encourage them to stay in school and study hard.

WASSCE goes on earnestly
The WASSCE started earnestly in the Sunyani Municipality without any hindrance, and when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited some of the examination centres, candidates were waiting patiently for the examination questions.

At the Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School, a total of 509 candidates, made up of 282 males and 224 females were writing the examination.

The centre recorded three absentees, according to the supervisors, but could not give reasons for the absenteeism.

At the Sunyani Senior High School (SUSEC) examination centre, Mrs Georgina Boakye, headmistress of SUSEC, said 785 candidates, made up of 455 males and 330 females were writing the papers, and added that all the candidates were present.
