Ice Cream Seller Jailed For Defilement

A 19-year-old ice cream seller has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court after he had admitted abducting and defiling a 14-year-old girl.

Daniel Frimpong Bassit admitted the offence in a court, presided over by Mrs. Rita Agyemang-Budu where he was charged with abducting a female under the age of 16 years.

He was consequently convicted on his own plea and sentenced to three years for the abduction while he was handed eight years for defilement. Both sentences would run concurrently.

Narrating events leading to the arrest of the suspect, the prosecutor, ACP Moses Atibilla, told the court that the complainant, Alfred Kwame Kodom, is the father of the victim who resides with her at Pobiman, near Accra and that the convict also lives in the same area.

According to him, Bassit is an ice cream seller in the area and said some time ago the accused person proposed love to the victim who accepted it, adding that on March 23, 2015 the convict went to the victim’s school at Kuntunse and invited her to his house.

The police officer indicated that later that evening the victim went to the convict and he had sexual intercourse with her and stayed with him for six days.

Furthermore, he stated that on March 29, 2015 the victim was brought home by a certain lady and when her father questioned her, she narrated her encounter with the ice cream seller and so a report was made to the police.

In addition, he said that the victim was given a form to go for medical examination and treatment and the ice cream seller was arrested, saying he admitted the offence in his caution statement.
