A total of 5,979 crime cases were recorded by the Accra Central Divisional Police last year, as against 6,252 the previous year.
This shows a reduction of 273.
The Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joseph Oklu Gyamerah, who revealed this at the 2014 West African Security Services Association (WASSA) celebration in Accra on Friday, said that, stealing and assault accounted for 67 per cent.
The occasion which attracted personnel from the five districts, was meant for stock taking as well as merrymaking.
Participants were entertained by the Central Band, with guest artistes such as Obour and Chizzy Wailer gracing the event.
He said a number of measures such as day and night patrols, snap checks, swoops, and intelligence gathering system, visibility and motorbike patrols, were used to check criminal activities.
ACP Gyamerah said since 2010 up to date, the division has recorded a consistent reduction in the volume of cases each year.
The Divisional Commander said that his outfit has embarked on educational programmes aimed at sensitising the personnel on current trends and contemporary modus operandi adopted by the criminals.
He said interactive fora would be held for various communities, especially drivers to educate them to help in curbing the spate of accidents on the road.
He commended the personnel for their dedication to duty, and urged them to give of their best in ensuring that their goals are accomplished.
ACP Gyamerah commended stakeholders for their support to the division in accomplishing its goals.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu, urged the personnel to work hard in their chosen profession.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpujie, commended the personnel for their support to the assembly over the years, and presented an unspecified amount of money to the division to assist them in their activities.
As part of the programme, awards were presented to the personnel for their hard work.
