PRESS RELEASE

GHANAIANS IN DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY - GERMANY

COUNCIL OF STATE MUST DO BROADER CONSULTATION BEFORE ADVISING THE PRESIDENT

Ghanaians in Defence of Democracy an advocacy and pressure group based in Germany throw our firm support behind the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) in their quest to bring pressure to bear on electoral reforms in Ghana.

This vibrant group is willing to help to protect and strengthen our young democracy ahead of 2016 elections.

In fact we believe in transparency and open consultation on our electoral reforms hence the need to join hands with (LMVCA) on their call on the President to consult widely before appointing the next Chairman of the EC.

Article 70 (2) of 1992 constitution says; "The President SHALL acting on the ADVICE of the Council of State, appoint the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and other members of the commission."

For this reason, a clear sign of the Council of State leading the process must be seen by all Ghanaians and stakeholders consultation must be done thoroughly before advising the President and any move to do NDC party bidding must be aggressively resisted.

For this reasons, Ghanaians in Defence of Democracy, made up of Ghanaians domiciled in Germany is joining forces with LMVCA and all like-minded groups in calling on all Ghanaians, political parties, the media and all civil society groups to engage in this crucial and important process which will go a long way to ensure transparency and a fair and peaceful election in 2016 and in subsequent ones.

Finally, we call on Council of State to pay heed to this urgent call and proceed on the side of caution and national unity since the future and progress of this nation will depend on this all important decision of appointing a credible individual to head the Electoral Commission.

God bless Ghana
Thank you.
