Kweku Baako Jnr. has countered arguments and calls on civil society groups and political parties in the country to stop suggesting names to the Council of State in replacement of Dr. Afari Gyan, who will be proceeding on his retirement in June.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Kweku Baako called for a healthy discourse into the choice of a suitable Electoral Commissioner in the stead of the Dr. Afari Gyan.

According to him, the nation's laws do not gag any individual nor group from making proposals to the Council of State who upon their advice President John Mahama will exercise authority to select a new Electoral Commissioner.

Despite the caution by some socio-political commentators like the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt that civil society groups and parties should be abstained from the various consultations; Mr. Baako believes the doors should be opened for the parties.

“I’m not against the noise even if they’re ugly noises. I’m not against public discussions going on. I’m not against even the fact that there’s some level of anxiety and suspense. We’re speaking about elections and elections are very critical for democracy, at least democratic consolidation. The more elections have integrity, the more that democracy gets consolidated and the more the country enjoys security and stability."

To him, this will help foster democracy in the election processes of the nation.

"...it’s very [very] critical. So if there’s some anxiety there, suspense there, agitation there, controversy there; it’s all good for the country.”
