Vodafone Foundation Sponsors 100 SHS Girls Pursuing Science And Maths

Telecommunications giant, Vodafone has unveiled the first batch of 100 beneficiaries of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation Scholarship Scheme - a scholarship programme introduced to provide financial and technical support to brilliant but needy first year Senior High female students across the country.

The package, in partnership with the British Council, caters for the tuition fees, learning materials and educational expenses of the beneficiaries for their 3-year secondary education. The scheme was launched to bridge the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) by increasing females’ involvement in these subjects in Ghana.

Addressing guests at the award ceremony held at the British Council in Accra, Gayheart Mensah, Director of External Affairs at Vodafone Ghana said:

“As we have constantly reiterated, our passion for female empowerment in Science and Technology has never been in doubt. Over the years, we have noticed that the number of females employed within the technology field in Ghana is disproportionate compared to their male counterparts. What we want to do is create an enabling environment for women to become successful in their future career choices.

Through our “Diversity and Inclusion’ agenda, we can help in ensuring that the next generation of girls passionate about pursuing careers in STEM are adequately equipped to do so.”

Commenting on the initiative, Honourable Alex Kyeremeh, Deputy Minister for Education (Pre-Tertiary) said:

“In undertaking this initiative, our nation will see a corresponding increase in the number of female students venturing into mathematics and science; two subjects currently considered very difficult and mythical.”

One of the 100 beneficiaries, Margaret Siameh, a student of Achimota School, said the sponsorship by Vodafone has made it possible for her parents to concentrate on the education of her other 6 siblings.
