Man Jailed Ten Years For Defilement

The Yendi Circuit Court has sentenced a 35-year old man, Alhassan Wumbei, to 10 years imprisonment  for defiling a five-year old girl.

Police Sergeant Joseph Gyamfi told the court that  the complainant, Effia Wumbei, is a drinking bar attendant at Balogu, a suburb of Yendi, and mother of the victim.

Sgt Gyamfi said the accused person, a weaver at Balogu is  currently a labourer of the Eastern Corridor Road Construction Company, and a regular customer of the complainant.

The prosecution said on  March 14, at about 9:45pm,  the accused person went to complainant's drinking spot,  and after drinking picked the girl onto his motorbike and drove to his house at Balogu.

According to the prosecution,  when they got to the house,  the accused person’s son Mohammed Wumbei was viewing  television, so the two joined the son to view the television.

Sgt Gyamfi  said,  later the accused person’s son left the room, and the accused person took advantage of his son’s absence and had carnal knowledge of the girl.

The prosecution said, when the complainant had information that her daughter was in the house of the accused person, she went there with some family members.

Sgt Gyamfi said when they examined the girl, it was detected that blood was oozing from her  vagina, and so  they proceeded to the Yendi Police station and made a report.

The prosecution said the girl was issued with a police medical form, and when she went   to the Yendi Government Hospital, she was  referred to the  Tamale Teaching Hospital for a Specialist Gynecologist for examination.

Sgt Gyamfi  said on March 15,  the police arrested the accused person, and in his caution  statement admitted the offence.

Sentencing the accused person, the trial judge, His Honour Senyo,  regretted that  defilement cases were   rampant in the country.
