Police Intercept Dry Cocoa Beans

The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested one person for allegedly transporting a large quantity of dried cocoa beans suspected to have been stolen.

The suspect, Seth Kodie, was arrested last Sunday about 8:30 p.m. at the Tsopoli Police Barrier.

The consignment, which was being transported in a DAF tipper truck with registration number GT 9438-15, was heading towards Tema.

Briefing

Briefing journalists in Tema, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ms Juliana Obeng, said the police personnel, upon suspicion, demanded from the driver a waybill covering the cocoa beans he was transporting but he was unable to provide it.

That, she said, prompted the police to become more suspicious and based on that the driver was arrested and the truck impounded.

The dried cocoa beans were contained in 71 large jute sacks.

Further probe

Ms Obeng said as part of their investigations, the police would seek to find out whether there was proper documentation covering the consignment.

She said the police would seek to know where the consignment was coming from and its final destination.

On March 8, 2015, three persons, suspected to have stolen a truck load of dried cocoa beans valued at GH¢72,100, were also arrested in Tema and are currently facing trial at the Tema Circuit Court.
