My Engagement In Politics Is True Service To Mankind

Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, the flag bearer of the Progressive People's Party (PPP) for the 2012 Presidential Election, has stated that his engagement in politics is purely a true service to his country and people.

“I am seriously doing other businesses, such as banking, which are providing employment for Ghanaians and politics is purely for service to mankind," he declared.

The PPP flag bearer, who is the President of Groupe Nduom, explained in an interview with newsmen in Takoradi that it was tough doing business in Ghana but "where else can I go? This is where I want to be and we are using our money to get things done for the people".

Dr Nduom's interaction with the press was at a programme organised by the management of GN Bank, of which he is the Chairman.

The occasion, at the Atlantic Hotel in Takoradi in the Western Region, was to recognise customers for doing business with the bank since its establishment about a decade ago in the country.

More than 100 clients who attended the function were given souvenirs after enjoying a buffet (lunch) while the Winneba Youth Choir provided music.

Selfish gains

Dr Nduom observed that some people were in politics for their selfish parochial interest but "what I talk about is what I am doing in the country, to open up job opportunities for the people but not what I personally want to gain financially".

He said where the citizens of any country were desirous of establishing financial institutions, it meant there were a lot of prospects, adding that foreigners were only interested in doing business in the country and repatriating their profits.

IMF

Asked about the decision of the government to go in for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, the PPP flag bearer said, "The people in charge of the economy say that was their option because they could not do it alone, so I don't have anything to say."

He added, "They should go ahead but they should be willing to do what the IMF asks them to do. Some people have gone there and done well and so if they do it successfully we will all benefit. The leader of the country wants to go there so let us follow him and see what he can do and let's support him."

The President of the GN Bank pointed out that currently, GN Bank was spreading fast to certain locations quietly, and that by the close of the year about 300 branches would have been opened across the country.
