The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is sourcing funds to expand the Kpong Water Treatment Plant to produce an additional 40 million gallons of water a day.
Already, the company has erected four platforms on which four water pumps would be mounted under the second phase of expansion at the plant.
President John Mahama in December last year inaugurated the first phase of the project which resulted in the distribution of water to communities such as Adentan, Madina and surrounding areas which had experience irregular water supply for the past 25 years.
The Head of Communications of the GWCL, Mr Michael Agyeman, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of a tour of the facility by the sector Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, last Wednesday.
He said the phase two would include the construction of four additional water pumps, distribution lines, as well as the renovation of existing ones to ensure improved services to both the under-served and unserved communities.
Mr Agyeman-Mensah indicated that while the company was sourcing the funds, it was using its internally-generated funds to construct additional distribution lines.
Familiarisation tour Dr Agyeman-Mensah inspected work on the project as part of his familiarisation tour to agencies and departments under his jurisdiction upon assumption of office.
The sector minister also inspected the first phase of the affordable housing project at Saglemi, near Prampram in the Greater Accra Region, which is expected to be completed in March 2016.
Work on the 1,502 housing units is 55 per cent complete. The entire project will cost $200-million and is made up of 5,000 housing units.
Drainage systems, recreational centres, commercial facilities, roads and other infrastructure will be provided as part of the project.
Affordable homes Dr Agyeman-Mensah said the government was committed to providing affordable and safe homes for all.
That, he said, had informed the government’s decision to initiate the various housing projects nationwide, including those at Kpone and Borteyman.
