Remove Illegal Speed Ramps In Two Weeks- Minister

Madam Helen Ntoso, the Volta Regional Minister Tuesday gave a two-week ultimatum to communities which have constructed unauthorised speed ramps to remove them.

She said most of such ramps were without the required specifications and warning signs, therefore causing road crashes and must be removed “now.”

Addressing a press conference on the increasing number of unauthorised speed ramps in the Region, Madam Ntoso described the act as “lawlessness” and said a special task force would deal with communities which default in removing such illegal ramps.

She said any community which wanted a ramp on any road should pass the request through the Assembly to the necessary authorities for action.

Madam Ntoso directed the Municipal and District Assemblies to support the Information Service Department to educate people in the communities on how to cross roads.

She also asked the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and transport unions to intensify public education and pep talks to drivers.

Mr Daniel Wuaku, the Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission commended the Regional Minister for her interest in road safety and reiterated the readiness of the Commission to help reduce road crashes in the Region.

Statistics from the Road Safety Commission indicates that the Region recorded 123 road crashes in the first quarter of 2015, with 28 pedestrian knockdowns and 20 deaths.
