Electricity, Water Supply To K-Poly Disconnected

Power and water supply to the Koforidua Polytechnic have been disconnected. The polytechnic is said to be indebted to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to the tune of GH¢ 450.442.21 and GH¢51,380.21 respectively.

The ECG had given the polytechnic up to Thursday, April 30, 2015, to pay its indebtedness but it failed to meet the deadline.

Subsequently, the ECG disconnected power supply to the polytechnic on May 4, this month. This was after the GWCL had disconnected water supply to the polytechnic on April 25, last month.

Appeal

Confirming the issue to the Daily Graphic, the Registrar of the Polytechnic,  Nii Annang -Mensah Livingstone, appealed for government intervention since the institution was not resourced enough to pay the debts.

He mentioned the consequences of the disconection to include the inability of students to study at night and the cancellation of evening lectures.

According to the registrar, the polytechnic's FM Station, which was often used to disseminate information to students, particulary those on distance learning programmes, had also been affected.

"In addition to this, the public addres system cannot be used and already, information reaching us indicate that students have started agitating", he added.

Worried students

Some of the students who spoke to the Daily Graphic said they would, in the coming days embark on a massive demonstration against what they called unfair treatment through no fault of theirs.

They were of the view that if care was not taken, there could be an outbreak of cholera since there was no water on campus.

The SRC President of the polytechnic, Mr Michael Wedaga Tigawuti, expressed worry at the development saying, students were going through difficult times as they could not even iron their clothes and engage in other chores that required electricity and water.
