Nyantakyi In Stadium Boycott

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi seems to have been rattled by the recent attack by fans, and consequently threatened to boycott domestic league games.

The FA boss indicated after the incident that he would prefer staying at home in order to avoid verbal attacks and heckles like it happened last Sunday at the Accra Stadium.

Nyantakyi wondered why fans had not drawn any lessons from the infamous May 9 disaster which claimed about 130 lives at the same venue due to crowd violence.

He pointed out: “Some of us have been looking for ways of marketing our matches to attract the needed fans by serving as ambassadors, but if this is what we shall be given in return, then it is better we don’t come to the stadium at all.

“I was shocked when the incident happened. I had been dreaming of watching this particular game because this is one of the few times I have been around when such a game is being played.

“I had told a lot of people of my intention to watch this game because I think it can promote the game somehow.

“But if I will go to the stadium to be exposed to these acts, then I better stay at home for my safety.”

The fans, who attributed Hearts’ 0-1 loss to Djoliba in Accra on Sunday to the PLB’s refusal to grant a domestic league match postponement, directed their anger at the GFA chief, heckling him on his way out of the stadium.

Nyantakyi has since reported the matter to the Nima Police Station, while management of Hearts of Oak have condemned the act and as result rendered an unqualified apology to the FA boss.
