Corpse Goes Home With 3 Family Members

The movement of dead bodies from one place to another is usually done using a hearse. But here in Ghana, it is gradually becoming a custom for people to convey dead bodies using taxi cabs.

In some parts of the country, especially in the Volta and Northern regions, a motorbike is even used, where the rider courageously straps the dead body in his back and rides for many miles to the village or town where the body is to be buried.

However, an attempt by four men from Prestea in the Prestea Huni Valley District of the Western Region to copy this bad practice has resulted in all, but one, accompanying the dead body to its grave.

The yet to be identified men died at Ohiama Adwen near Shama yesterday, when the taxi cab they were using to transport a dead body from Prestea to Kasoa in the Central Region ran into a tipper truck, killing them instantly.

The fourth person sustained serious injuries and is currently on admission at the regional hospital in Sekondi.

The taxi cab, with registration number GF8054-12, was mangled beyond recognition. The three fresh bodies, together with the corpse they were conveying, have since been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, whilst the police search for their families.

A Unit Committee Chairman of Ohiamadwen village confirmed the accident on radio yesterday.
