How 'The Messi Diet' Made Aguero The Premier League's Best Striker

The Argentine believes a recent change in his eating habits has helped him to perform better on the pitch, as is the case with his illustrious international team-mate.

Sergio Aguero has revealed that a visit to a doctor used by Lionel Messi has helped improve hisManchester City form and fitness record.

The Argentina international has scored 31 goals in all competitions this season, providing the prolific focal point of City's attack for the majority of an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Last summer Aguero's international team-mate Messi revisited Giuliano Poser - an Italy-based nutritionist who requires his patients to travel to see him - in a bid to improve his own performance level.

And the City man claims the susequent changes he has made to his diet have enabled him to avoid the muscle injuries which beset his 2013-14 season.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: “I had to change a lot of things, starting with my food. I needed a healthier way of life.

“Touch wood, I haven’t had any muscle injuries this season, only the knee problem.

“In training sessions I was struggling a little bit last season. For example, after every three training sessions I had to stop – so I have improved in that.

"I have also had to have a lot of treatment after training sessions as well – now I hope I can stay like this until the end of my career.

“I went to a doctor in Italy and he checked everything we did, and I had to change quite a bit – no more pasta, no sugar and no meat, which I used to eat quite a bit because Argentinian meat is very good. Hopefully, this season has proved that it has worked and I can stay the same until the end of my career.”

The Argentine also insists he has moved on from his snub at the PFA awards - his peers opted to select Diego Costa and Harry Kane up front in their Team of the Year - and is intent on scoring as many goals as possible.

"It also happened in the season when I scored 23 goals and we won the Premier League and I didn’t get the Young Player of the Season award," he added.

“So my job is just to keep working as hard as I can, and keep scoring goals – I expect to do the same again next season.

“Every season is different – I hope I can keep scoring like this, but defenders now know me a bit better and defend against me in different ways.

“My job is to score goals, but what I really want next season is for City to win titles.”

City travel to Swansea City on Sunday knowing that victory will boost their chances of finishing second in the Premier League this season.
