Cops Perching In Uncompleted Building

The lives of over a hundred police personnel and their families residing in an uncompleted building which they converted into barracks in Tema are in grave danger due to the dilapidated nature of the building.

There is an apprehension that a rainstorm one of these days could send the two-story rundown structure dubbed ‘Militia House’ located at Community 2, Tema tumbling down and may take some innocent lives along.

Officers were forced to use mosquito nets and plywood to cover portions of the uncompleted building just to have a place to lay their heads. Information gathered by Daily Guide indicated that the structure was built by a private developer and hijacked by squatters some years ago and the police took over when they were called to eject the squatters from the building.

The residents daringly connected light and water illegally into the building which they were using till it was recently detected by the utility service providers and disconnected. But the perchers quickly connected it again.

The accommodation does not augur well for effective policing due to its deplorable state. There were deeps cracks in the walls and the roofing was in tatters and parts had even ripped off. The beams which support the roofing were loose and some of them were falling. The situation could become miserable when the rains properly set in and the occupants would have had a hard time containing it. Some police personnel who spoke with Daily Guide said they had no option than to manage the accommodation although it was a death trap.

The residents claimed they have made several appeals to the government to have the place renovated but have had no response at the moment.
