A newly-qualified nurse, Caroline Medie, stunned the Ho Circuit Court on Monday, when she appeared before it accused of swindling a financial company to the tune of GH¢9,300.
According to the prosecution, she used the pay-slips of two of her course mates to execute the scam at the Delax Financial Company at Ho-Bankoe, last year, while they were all students at the Ho Nurses Training College.
Medie, in her twenties, pleaded not guilty to two counts of defrauding by false pretences.
Inspector Henry A. B. Dery told the court, presided over by Mrs Roberta Otriso, that the accused picked up the pay slips of the two course mates on September 8, last year, from a staff at the college, after assuring the officer that they had sent her to collect the slips on their behalf.
With the pay-slips, Medie went to the company’s office at Ho- Bankoe, and made a false representation that she had been sent by her colleagues to procure loans for them.
To convince the company, the prosecution said the accused recruited some people to talk to officials of the company on phone, and posed as her colleagues whose pay slips she had presented to them.
In so doing, Medie succeeded in obtaining a loan of GH¢5,000 with the first pay slip and another GH¢4,300 with the other one, the prosecution added.
The court further heard that on October 2, 2014, when one of the two course mates went to the college for her pay-slip, she was informed that the accused had already collected hers, and that of the other mate.
She immediately contacted the accused who rather gave her a photo-copy of the pay-slip.
Later, the mate also applied for a loan from the same company only to be told that her play-slip had already been presented by the accused for a loan.
Subsequently, a complaint was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Medie.
According to the prosecution, the accused admitted using the pay-slips of her two colleagues to convince Delax Financial Company to obtain the loans.
The court granted Medie, GH¢10,000 bail with three sureties, one to be justified.
