The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea says government is not being truthful to Ghanaians as far as the recent fuel price hikes are concerned.

“Government is not being truthful, the actual reason for the increment is because they were not able to sustain the cedi and now it keeps depreciating; but they just don’t want to tell us the truth,” he said.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Sunday, May, 17, 2015 made a 9% upward adjustment of the prices of petroleum products.

Many people have complained of the hikes especially on the face of the ever-worsening power crisis but Chief Executive officer of the NPA, Moses Asaga says it is for the best of Ghanaians.

He said on PEACE FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Monday, that if government do not increase petroleum products, there will be fuel shortage, adding, the fuel hikes is a reflection of the recent price increases on Brent crude oil, diesel and petrol on the international market.

However, Nana Akomea disagrees.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Tuesday, he said since July last year up to date, the price of oil on the international market fell to about 50 per cent and we have had a reduction of only about ten per cent.

"Last year the cedi lost 31 per cent in value and this year from January to today it has lost 19 per cent. So the main reason behind this increase is the fall in the value of the cedi… government is not being honest with Ghanaians," he indicated.
