Explanation For Fuel Price Hike By NPA Is Nonsensical - Sammy Awuku

Following the explanation given by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to be the cause of the fuel price hike, Sammy Awuku, the national youth organizer of the opposition NPP has hit hard at the authority.

The Public Relations Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Yaro Kasambata on Okay Fms Ade Akye Abia Morning Show on Monday May 18, 2015 explained that the cause of fuel price increase is due to price of crude oil and the price of the world market refined petrol.

He added that between mid February to May 17, prices of crude oil and refined product on the world market have gone up.

In justifying the fuel price increment, the PRO of the NPA said the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar, indicating that between mid February and now, the cedi has depreciated against the dollar as this has affected the price of fuel.

But reacting to the explanation on the same platform on Tuesday May 19, 2015, Sammy Awuku said the explanation given is nonsensical as Ghanaians have done nothing wrong to be affected by the depreciation of the cedi.

What wrong did Ghanaians do if the exchange rate has gone high? It is government's incompetence so why should we pay for the incompetence of this limping government? Why do we have to be burdened again amidst of the hardship with this debt incurred by the government?,he quizzed.

We should suffer to pay these people and with all due respect, they sit there to tell us nonsense. The prices of crude oil is less than $60 per barrel and as a concerned government, see how much they are selling petrol to Ghanaians; compare this price to NPP era when crude oil was $147 per barrel and yet fuel price was Gh5.00 but now at less than $60 per barrel, fuel price is almost Gh15.00.I find it difficult to understand the explanation given by NPA, he fumed.
