A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment in hard labour, by a Kumasi Circuit Court for pouring acid on his wife, for reporting his misconduct to his employers.
Peter Appiah, the convict, did not understand why his wife, Susanna Appiah, should report him to his employer, for leaving their home without informing her.
He pleaded guilty to causing unlawful harm to his wife contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960(Act 29) and the court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Adu-Amankwah, sentenced him on his own plea.
Chief Inspector Gulliver Tenkorang, prosecuting, told the court that Appiah was a security officer at the Saint Michael Hospital, Jachie Pramso.
On May 4, his wife woke up around midnight, and discovered that the husband was not in the room.
According to the prosecution, she reported the incident to the authorities of the hospital.
Two days later, Appiah went to their farm at Akokofe where the wife and their 12-year-old son had gone to work, and picked a quarrel with her over the report she made to the hospital authorities.
Appiah then picked a plastic gallon containing water, poured it out, filled it with a substance believed to be acid, and poured it on the wife, resulting in injuries on her body.
He fled the scene but was arrested at Kejetia four days after the incident, following a report to the Asokwa Police.
