EC Fixes Date for Akwatia Re-Run

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has fixed 18th August, 2009 for the Akwatia re-run in the six pools which sparked controversy during the 2008 general elections. The spokesperson for the EC, Mr Owusu Pare who disclosed this to Peace FM, outlined the six polling centres as Presby JSS, Yoreba Mosque A, Yoreba Mosque B, Lorry Station A, Lorry Station B and A.M.E. Church A. He added that, the Supreme Court gave them the mandate to fix the date, so no political party can make them change it. The Supreme Court on Wednesday July 15, 2009 ordered the Electoral Commission to re-run elections at the said six polling centres in the Akwatia Constituency following a petition by the NDC candidate, Baba Jamal and two other independent candidates, Samuel Abrokwah and Basil Ahiable. There were controversies over the ballots in the six polling centres with claims of ballot-box tampering.
