The Coalition of Concerned Teachers has threatened to sue the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) if it fails to pay all service providers the debt owed them by September.

“We are giving government up to September, if all outstanding arrears that is owed service providers are not paid, we CCT shall curse the law in court,” said the Vice President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, King Ali Awudu.

Service providers earlier threatened to reject all National Health Insurance cards if the NHIA failed to pay all arrears owed them but the Minister of Finance Seth Terkper had stated in Parliament that all arrears owed them had been paid.

However speaking to Citi News, King Ali Awudu stated that the NHIS is still cash strapped.

“We don’t understand the reason why all these pool of money, amounting to hundreds of millions of ghana cedis every year should go into the National Health Insurance Scheme but every now and then the NHIS cries of funds and for that matter they are unable to pay service providers

“Our concern is very simple, as public sector workers, we contribute 2.5 percent of our future, of our pension towards the National Health Insurance Scheme.Let us not also forget that there is 2.5 percent aspect of VAT that also goes into the National Health Insurance Scheme,” he said.

He suggested government channels the 2.5 percent accrued from the Unions to provide health services or set up policies to support the services.
