A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim has advised all feuding factions within the party to cease fire and allow peace to prevail.

There are increasing calls on the party’s National Chairman Paul Afoko and scribe Kwabena Agyepong to resign from their positions for allegedly causing rifts within the party which some allege, led to the murder of the NPP’s Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

Mr Pianim acknowledged that recent events happenings in the NPP have triggered very strong passions and strong views among members but he warned that if care is not taken, it will lead to the ultimate destruction of the party. 

“All the factions should pull themselves from the brink… let us call a truce… Ghana is too important for our personal small egos to get in the way. It is Ghana that is at stake,” he noted.

The Council of Elders has reportedly written to the two national officers to step aside to allow peace to prevail but Agypeong has categorically stated he will not step down and intends to see out his tenure.


Kwame Pianim on Eyewitness News however urged the supporters of the party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong to call a truce and let cool heads prevail.

According to him, it will be suicidal if the NPP loses any member because the party needs everyone on board to help win the 2016 presidential elections.

“We need everybody in the party; we cannot afford to let one person go out – Kwabena Agyepong or Paul Afoko…so let epace prevail.”

Kwame Pianim observed that the quest to kick out Afoko and Agyepong over allegations that they have been sowing seeds of discord within the party is incorrect.

He was of the view that the problems the NPP is facing did not emanate from an individual but “it’s all of us who allowed these fights on the radio in the electronic and print media – they all seem to encourage this very, very difficult political debate that has gone beyond the point of civility.”

“If NPP is destroyed now, it’s destroyed for everybody and if anybody tries to go and form another party, it won’t work because third parties have never worked in Ghana,” he cautioned.

“We should all stop insulting one another, all of us should rally together and unite to give the memory of our brother the honour it deserves,” he advised.
