Authority Resolves Impasse With National Ambulance Service

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has withdrawn its decision not to render services at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

This follows a stakeholders’ meeting in Kumasi, presided over by the NAS’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Professor Ahmed Zakariah, to address their grievances.

The Ashanti Regional Office of the NAS had for some time been on collision course with the National Sports Authority (NSA) over the failure of the Authority to meet their demands to facilitate their work at the Stadium during sporting events.

It had since November, last year, refused to send ambulances for emergencies at the Stadium, insisting that, its services would only be available after some specific demands had been met.

A letter written by the Regional NAS Coordinator, Dr. Andah Nacauley, had asked the NSA to as a pre-condition for their services, provide them with fuel, per diem allowances, gloves, bandages and plaster, as well as food and water to facilitate their work at the Stadium.

The Sports Authority, however, refused to accede to those demands, describing the development as ridiculous since the Ambulance Service had been mandated to provide essential and unconditional services at the Stadium during sporting events.

Mr. Ewuntoma Richard Iddrisu, the Regional Director of Sports, briefing the GNA Sports on the latest development, said the NAS “have agreed in principle to continue providing services at the Stadium”.

“We have resolved our differences and the Ambulance Service had agreed to provide unconditional services at the Stadium during sporting events”, he said.

Mr. Iddrisu described the decision of the NAS as encouraging, considering the fact that sports and emergencies were intertwined.
