Attitudinal Change Will Help Prevent Disasters - NADMO

Mr Ransford Owusu Boakye, Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has called for attitudinal change towards the environment, to avoid human-induced disasters.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he blamed the threat of disasters to the country during the raining season on the way people build on water ways, dispose of refuse into choked gutters, undertake illegal mining activities “galamsey,” and other environmental vices .

Mr Boakye said as part of efforts to curb rainfall disaster this year in the region, his outfit had undertaken sensitization exercises three months ago in churches, mosque and other places, to educate people on how to avoid flooding when it rained.

He indicated that the region had adequate equipment, like jackets, rain coats, wellington boots, water pumping machines, and other necessary gadgets for rescue operations whenever flooding occurred .

Mr Boakye urged Districts and Municipal Assemblies not to issue building permits to people who wanted to build on water ways, and places classified as disaster-prone areas.

He advised illegal miners to reclaim the lands after every mining activity, and urged them not to block water ways when undertaking their mining activities.

Mr Boakye urged households to constantly distil gutters in and around their houses for water to have easy access whenever it rained.
