Ghana Is Missing The Mark

The Reverend Francis A.K. Lodonu, Catholic Bishop of Ho, on Wednesday, observed that Ghana was increasingly missing the mark of education, with the educated unable to participate effectively in society.

He said though many could “parrot” and “whistle” out what they were taught, they could not use the knowledge to tackle and solve problems facing the nation.

Bishop Lodonu was speaking at the inauguration of a nursery and kindergarten block for Lume-Atsyame Roman Catholic Basic School.

The project, valued at GHC 209,000 was financed by kindermissionswerk from Germany.
Bishop Lodonu said it was unfortunate that, the citizenry only quarreled and condemned one another or promised solutions for the country’s power challenges.

He said it was regrettable that the country’s educated and higher institutions simply had no answer to Ghana’s socio-economic problems and expressed the fear that the situation could get worse without the intervention of the developed countries.

Bishop Lodonu said the situation had been made worse with the downgrading of religion and moral dimensions of education, which had given rise to bribery, corruption and negligence of duty, and inviting untold calamities on the nation.
“If our education cannot equip us intellectually, scientifically and technologically to face our problems, should we make our situation worse through religion and moral bankruptcy?” he asked.

Bishop Lodonu called for serious introspection by policy makers and implementers to rescue the country’s fallen standard in education.

Togbe Agbenyedzoe, the Dufia of Lume-Atsyame, expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for its continued contribution to education and health sectors of the economy.

He also commended kindermissionswerk for providing funding for the project, executed by the Development Office of the Ho Diocese of the Catholic Church.

Mr Alexander Mawusi Boadi, the Acting Volta Regional Director of Education, in a speech read on his behalf, expressed hope that the facility would help improve academic performance in the school and charged the staff to maintain the infrastructure.
