The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says Ghanaians have not seen the end of fuel hikes yet. He said this week’s four per cent increment on petroleum prices announced Tuesday is only a tip of the iceberg.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Kwabena Agyepong said the increment on petroleum prices “is nothing more than symptoms of government's incompetence."
Kwabena Agyapong said the Mahama-led government had continually proven to Ghanaians that it did not have the expertise to resolve the issue of petroleum pricing. Mr. Agyepong also disclosed that the failure of government to arrest the free fall of the Cedi meant Ghanaians will constantly be at the receiving end of government’s incompetency. "The key parameter is that they cannot control the cedi depreciation. At every turn the cedi loses to the dollar the ex-pump price would have to increase," the NPP scribe said.
The recent petroleum price hike announcement has led to unimaginable commotion at some fuel stations in the country. Some motorists could not come to terms with the new price announcements because according to them, only a month ago, similar hikes were implemented.
But Kwabena Agyapong who describes the hikes are unacceptable told The New Crusading GUIDE that Ghanaians should learn their lessons from the harsh economic situations presented to them by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
“At the time we left government, the cedi was equivalent to one but now the cedi is equivalent to four dollars”. He said there is the need for a more competent government with a track record of managing the cedi to be elected into office to save the country from the quagmire.
He said at the time crude oil was selling at 147 dollars per barrel, Ghanaians were not buying fuel at this price because the then government was able to manage the cedi well and wondered why the citizens would be made to pay more at a time crude oil is relatively low.
