Five-Storey Building Collapses At Apatrapa

A five-storey building at Apatrapa near Kumasi, being renovated to be used as a hostel for students of the University of Education Winneba, Kumasi campus, collapsed last Sunday.

There was no casualty because all the four occupants of the building were said to have gone to church.
The building was constructed by the Judgement Day Church more than 20 years ago.

During a visit to the compound yesterday, the Daily Graphic found out that the pillars of some of the eight other buildings belonging to the church on the same compound were very weak while others had deep cracks in them.

NADMO

The head of the Kwadaso sub-metro of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Umar Alhassan, told the Daily Graphic that his outfit would recommend to the city authorities to assess all the buildings on that compound.

He was of the conviction that some of the buildings would have to be modified while others would have to be demolished to prevent any future disaster.

Caretaker

The caretaker of the collapsed building, Mr Owusu Nketiah, told the Daily Graphic that the plot on which the building was located is the property of the late Rev. Asiama, also known as Quotation Master, who constructed the houses 25 years ago.

Mr Nketiah, who is also putting up in one of the adjoining buildings, said he was away when he received a call that the building had collapsed.

He said the buildings were being renovated to be used as hostels for students of the University of Education Winneba, Kumasi campus.
