Hearts, Kotoko for Presidents Cup tomorrow

Traditional rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, have been drawn against each other to play this year’s President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium tomorrow.

The annual ceremonial match to honour the sitting president is usually organised on Republic Day by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

According to a GHALCA executive committee member, Albert Commey, the decision to match up Hearts and Kotoko follows their pedigree as the most accomplished clubs in the country despite their recent dip in form.

After taking a break last year to make way for Ghana’s participation in the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup, the organisers believe a Hearts-Kotoko match-up is the most appropriate pairing to pull the fans again to the Accra Sports Stadium days after Stephen Appiah’s successful testimonial match at the same venue last Saturday.

Initially, a Hearts-Ashgold pairing was high on GHALCA’s agenda following their thrilling league battles this season which ended 1-1 and 2-2 in Obuasi and Accra respectively. But the lot finally fell on the two giants who are expected to fit the bill better.

Tomorrow’s clash will afford Kotoko a fine opportunity to avenge their 0-1 first round defeat to their sworn rivals in Kumasi as they usually perform better in the capital.

As usual, President John Dramani Mahama is expected to be in attendance alongside some ministers of state.
According to investigations, each club is expected to receive GH¢30,000 appearance fee. At stake are a giant trophy and medals.
