In a landmark opinion, a divided Supreme Court on June 27th, 2015 ruled that same-sex couples can marry in the United States of America.

Despite the ruling that establishes a new civil right and hands gay rights advocates a historic victory, the world has heard from other African leaders condemning the ruling.

Ghanaians are yet to hear President Mahama pass any comment on the ruling. For this reason, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has challenged President Mahama to communicate his thoughts on the latest ruling which is un-Biblical, un-Christian and un-African.

According to him, former late President Atta Mills stood his grounds when he told the western world that his administration would not go against the wishes of the people by endorsing the practice of homosexuality which is an act against Ghanaian culture and norms.

Prior to that the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon was reported to have told African leaders at a meeting that discrimination based on sexual orientation had been ignored or even sanctioned by many states for far too long.

Regardless of all, the late former president disclosed that his government would not support any legislation that would legalise homosexuality in Ghana.

As a nation we are yet to hear from President Mahama, and the Christian Council firmly believe that if he should say something, it would go a long way for Ghanaians to know whether he supports his predecessor’s stance or against it.
