A misunderstanding on Thursday afternoon between a resident and some worshipers at a mosque at Changli, a suburb of Tamale, led to the police firing warning shots to disperse a mob.
The resident, Abdel Rauf Alidu, who is a lawyer and Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, had complained about the unbearable noise from the mosque, which he claims disturbs his peace and demanded that something be done about it.
This did not go down well with the worshipers in the area, who gathered around the mosque to protest.
This created a scene, resulting in the police intervening with six police personnel but they were chased away by the residents.
A reinforcement team of about 30 police personnel arrived later and fired several warning shots to restore calm in the area.
The Ghana News Agency attempted to talk to the leader of the police team but he declined.
