The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed a suit filed by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency.

Afenyo-Markin and his client Kwadjora Adra were praying the court to restrain staff of Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) and Ghana Education Service (GES) from contesting for political positions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Effutu constituency.

However, the seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Sophia Akuffo ruled that public servants at GES and GHA can run for any political office.

According to the Court, the two main defendants: NDC Chairman for Efutu in the Central Region, Lawrence Lamptey and Chief technical officer at the GHA, Ernestina Yawson were not civil servants and so they can go ahead to contest for any position in any political party.
