2 Sisters Perish In Fire Outbreak

Two sisters died in a fire that razed down the wooden structure in which they were sleeping in the early hours of Monday at Tema New Town.

The victims were identified by Fire officials as Emmanuella Koenor, 4 and Gifty Koenor, 14.

The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Police hospital for post mortem.

The fire destroyed four structures, three of which were used as dwelling places whilst the other served as a popular drinking spot called Zim Bay Spot.

A source close to the Ghana national Fire Service at Team, told The Ghanaian Times that his outfit received a distressed call at about 2.25 a.m. of a fire outbreak at Tema New Town.

It said fire service personnel were immediately deployed to the scene to control the fire.

“It took us close to two hours to bring the fire under control and to extinguish it altogether,” the source said.
The source said it was when they were salvaging items from the rubble that they discovered the bodies of the two victims and alerted the police.

An eye-witness said as part of the power rationing exercise by the Electricity Company of Ghana, there was a general light out (dumsor) in the area at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

He said as a result, a candle was lit to illuminate one of the rooms where the victims were sleeping, together with nine other family members.

The eye witness said about 2:00 am, the room caught fire and some people raised the alarm, compelling the occupants of the wooden structures and the adjoining rooms to run for their lives, while others tried salvaging the few items they could lay hands on.

He said during in the pandemonium, the victims were left behind, but the intensity of the fire was so high that no one could risk going back to rescue them.
