The Ghanaian Premier League has been rated 63rd in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics in its first assessment for the year of the relative strengths of the various leagues. The just ended league saw an intriguing finish to the league title and relegated teams. But by the IFFHS criterion, the level of performance of a league is reflected by the best classified teams of that league who in turn usually represent their country in international club competitions.
Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions failed to progress to the Group phase of this year's Caf Champions League. At present Nigeria has the strongest African league ahead of Egypt, Angola, Algeria, Cameroon and the once strong league of Tunisia. The big surprise is the present 28th place of the league of Libya. Nigeria - with three teams still represented in the group phase of the Caf culb competitions - has the best chance of becoming the stongest African league 2009 and, with it, breaking the North African dominance.
But Egypt remains the greatest rival. The English Premier League has a large lead as the strongest European league, but, as result of large differences in performance of the teams, its lead as the strongest league in the world is only a narrow one. This is reflected also in the fact that only one English team reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.
